An online program for teachers and instructional leaders who want to make lasting improvements to practice.

Responsive teachers operate from a deep understanding of how people learn. They teach with clarity and precision, drawing on a repertoire of formative assessment techniques to adjust instruction in real time, and in response to the students in front of them. Whether you want to enhance your own classroom practice or develop the capacity of others, this is a program that offers the right balance of theory, challenge and action.

What you will learn

Engage with the current science of learning

  • Develop a strong mental model for learning: what is it, and how is it catalysed?

  • Consider the core differences between novices and experts - why don't they think the same, and what does it mean for our teaching?

  • Explore the importance of attention and the limits of working memory: what are the ramifications?

  • Explore important findings from cognitive science research, and draw out implications for classroom practice

  • Get clarity on the practices that are worth developing in light of the best available evidence

Develop responsive teaching techniques

  • Explore explicit and responsive principles of instruction

  • Expand your repertoire of short-cycle formative assessment techniques - the actual practices that allow you to be more responsive in the classroom

  • Reflect on existing instructional habits; what do we do that sometimes impedes good instruction?

  • Determine a clear focus for your own improvement, or the professional growth of your staff - sessions tailored to meet the needs of teachers and leaders

  • Use structured opportunities to put new knowledge to action, and get support along the way
